You can get the most accurate refund information about your federal income tax return through the IRS's secure website 72 hours after they acknowledge receipt of your return. Where's my refund? is fast, easy and safe. You will need to enter 3 pieces of information from your efiled return:

  • Your social security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.
  • Your filing status.
  • The exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund.

Note: It could take approximately 21 days for the IRS to release the funds. If you are looking for amended return information, please contact the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

The law allows the use of part or all of your federal tax refund to pay other federal or state debts that you owe. Here are some facts from the IRS that you should know about tax refund  offsets.'  tax refund offset generally means the U.S. Treasury has reduced your federal tax refund to pay for certain unpaid debts.

Not all debts are subject to a tax refund offset. To determine whether an offset will occur on a debt owed (other than federal tax), contact BFS's TOP call center at 800-304-3107 (866-297-0517 for TTY/TDD help).

  1. Call the FMS at 1-800-304-3107 to find out if your refund was reduced because of an offset.
  2. Call the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service at 1-877-777-4778 (or visit www.irs.gov/advocate) if you feel your refund was reduced in error. The service is free.
